The owners of this system presented us with a unique set of requirements. They desired a solar + storage system sized to supply energy for a home/office building, which is large enough to house two full families and also has a wing for their business. Additional loads to be backed up included a geothermal pump system and an electric vehicle charging station. This had to be accomplished with a solution that was grid-tied, but also one that provides the capability to go off-grid sustainably in the event the utility grid would have a long-term disruption. Finally, the system needed to integrate with a propane generator for backup of the solar batteries in the event of a period of extended poor sunlight.
The end result was a 49.5 kW ground-mounted solar array that back feeds into the building basement where the equipment is housed. The system utilizes Axitec solar panels, (4) Sunny Boy residential inverters to convert the solar power, (4) Sunny Island 6048 inverters to manage the interface between solar, utility, and battery power, and 12 Axitec LI10S batteries for energy storage. All this equipment also interfaces with an automated transfer switch for the propane generator, as well as smart meters that monitor the building's energy production and consumption.
